Hello all,
I am sorry to inform you that development on Aquila has stopped. It was not an easy decision, I have spend a lot of time and effort on this project.
The reason can be found in the new European Parliament directive on Intellectual Property. Until now, I was certain that P2P software was legal. Now, I am no longer sure.
The directive states:
| Quote: | | Member States shall ensure that all intentional infringements of an intellectual property right on a commercial scale, and attempting, aiding or abetting and inciting such infringements, are treated as criminal offences. |
Although the directive states that the infringement must be intentional, the aiding and abetting does not appear to be. Although Aquila never comes into contact with any actual file transfers, it does implement the DirectConnect protocol that can be used for infringement.
In short, I am not certain if this directive applies to Aquila but I have no desire to be held liable under it. Therefor, I have taken the only option open to me and stopped all development, support and distribution of Aquila until this issue is clarified.
